Procter & Gamble has issued a voluntary product recall of more than 30 aerosol spray dry shampoos and dry conditioners, warning that the products could contain benzene, a cancer-causing chemical linked to leukemia.
Benzene has been classified as a “known human carcinogen” by the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer based on sufficient evidence that it causes leukemia. It has also been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
The recall includes aerosol spray products from Pantene, Herbal Essences, Aussie, and Waterless, in addition to several discontinued aerosol dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food. The products are being recalled by Procter &Gamble after benzene was detected in some products.
Procter and Gamble issued a statement with the recall, saying, “Following recent reports that indicated traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products, we began a review of our total portfolio of aerosol products. While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can. We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the consumers who use our products and the quality of the products we ship. No other products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, Hair Food, and Waterless are in the scope of this recall.”
Consumers are advised to stop using the affected aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol dry shampoo spray products and to properly dispose of them.

The production codes can be found on the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the production code determine if your product is impacted and falls within the ranges included in the recall. This is the second Procter & Gamble recall in a couple of months. In November, the company recalled. Old Spice and Secret aerosol spray antiperspirants due to benzene being detected.
