We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Shawn Collins, a distinguished attorney and a true champion for both the legal and medical communities. Collins died on December 15, 2024, at the age of 67.
He will be remembered for his crucial role in saving the North American Spine Society (NASS) and, consequently, the practice of modern spine surgery. In 1995, NASS faced a significant challenge with the pedicle screw mass tort litigation, which involved 522 lawsuits against the organization. Through his aggressive and skillful legal strategy, Collins successfully defended NASS in every case. His efforts ensured that pedicle screw fixation—a critical technology for spine fusion surgery—remained on the market, preserving an essential tool for surgeons worldwide.
